FIFTEEN

The phone. Lying open on his car’s hood, where he’d let it slip from his sweating fist, Jules’s cell phone buzzed, tapping against the metal like a tiny Bojangles. He was breathing so hard from running after the car thieves that he almost hadn’t heard it.

Was it the realtor lady calling back? Jules realized he hadn’t finished their conversation. He wasn’t in any mood to speak with her now, even though he realized that her assertion that Doc Landrieu was still alive meant he’d have to talk with her, sooner rather than later. Might as well get it over with. He wiped the sickly sweat from his forehead, slowed his breathing to a moderate pant, and pressed the Talk button.

“Hello? Doosh—Duchon here.”

“Jules? Oh thank God I’ve reached you! You’ve got to come get me!”

It wasn’t the realtor. “Daphne?” He slumped against the Cadillac’s bumper. “This—this better be real important, sweetheart. Like, ‘I caught the rat’ important. You’re callin’ at one helluvah time.”

“Jules, I’m so scared. I’ve never been so scared my whole life.”

Shedid sound scared. Even with the phone’s lousy reception and what sounded like a boisterous crowd in the background, her fear was unmistakable. “What’s the matter? What happened?”

“I was chasing the rat through the Quarter, and this horrible woman—she—she was one of you!”

“Whadda you mean, ‘one of me’?” Daphne had just done the impossible. She’d taken his mind completely off his car. “She was a vampire?”

“She looked beautiful at first. But then she smiled, and her smile got wider and wider andwider, until she didn’t look like anything human anymore, and then I saw thoseteeth —”

“Did she hurt you? Bite you?”

“No. This man, he leaped from somewhere high, and he stuck this thing, I think it was a hypodermic, in her neck. It happened so fast—he moved so fast, and then he said something, and then I fainted...”

The vampire mutilator. It had to be. Daphne had seen the vampire mutilator. “Where are you?”

“I’m at this bar. The Good Friends Bar. It’s on Dauphine Street, I think. Wait a second, I’ll ask for the address—”

“It’s okay. I know where it is. Stay there, okay? Assumin’ my car still starts, I’ll be there in fifteen minutes. Otherwise, I’ll get a cab and maybe be there in a half hour. Don’t go outside.”

“I won’t. I promise. Just be fast, okay?”

“I’ll do my best, sweetheart. Hang in there.”

He snapped the phone shut and stuck it in his pocket. The night had a different quality now. The city had begun feeling comfortable again; he’d almost been feeling like his old self, the master of his own small, personal domain, even though hardly anything was the same as a year ago. But now, in two very different ways, the night had pimp-slapped him with its invisible tentacles, reminding him that blows could land unseen from any direction. The fact that both a vampiress and the vampire mutilator had gotten so close to Daphne... He shivered. Suddenly the whole case had a more visceral, more personal edge.
